How the Birth rEVOLution started

 April/May 2011

 As many of you know, I am just back from a fifteen day slumber party with EarthBirth Activists. First, seven days to start “The Birth Revolution” at the Human Rights in childbirth Summit held at the Midwifery Today Conference. This was the first time I am aware of a civil discussion of the persecution of women healers in North American. Next, I spent three days sharing with my own women's circle in Nor-Cal. And many, many long hours on phone calls, with birth activists all over the planet, I listened deeply to what is happening globally.  Finally, I had the amazing opportunity of spending three days in community with women, for the purpose of refining The Declaration of the Rights Held by Future Generations. http://www.wcffg.org/declarationfortherightsoffuturegenerations.cfm

I was up early and did not go to bed until very late for many nights. I had the privilege of gathering with amazing and devoted women to discuss the important issues of survival for our people and our planet. Then on the last day of my adventure, the most amazing thing happened! At the end of my journey when my mind and heart were completely full. We were visited by a very wise Elder Medicine Women; Camilla brought word from the Winter Solstice 2012 International Gathering at Lake Titicaca, Bolivia. She read the words from “The Elders” who had gathered from around the world to usher in this new era of “feminine wisdom”...My heart was radically opened and my tears began to flow freely as she read the words... I knew from what she said, and what my body told me… that the "COSMIC MOTHER' has returned for her children. I know that once again, the women's voice will be heard upon the land. This is the story of what happened.

WE (the birth community) started the BIRTH REVOLUTION at Human Rights in Childbirth Summit during the Midwifery Today Conference in Eugene Oregon April 2 2013...Using strategies developed by Gene Sharp, the man and mind behind the successful revolutions in most of Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The dictator/oppressor is the "Medical/Obstetrical Industrial Complex" and the oppression is massive human rights violations and the systematic destruction of choice for childbearing women in the world. We are hopeful that this will give us a focus and a way to rally together for real change for birth on our earth!

Sometime over the week I spent at the Midwifery Today Conference I started to ask myself WHY. Why are so many midwives being arrested at this time? Why are states midwifery laws being challenged? Frankly, the political activist in me started to smell a plot! What I find most disturbing is the fact that babies are dying at such an alarming rate in the USA. We do not ever hear about obstetricians being arrested on criminal charges for these deaths. So why are midwives being arrested as criminals in the USA?  The United States of America spends the most per capita, per birth of any developed nations.  Yet our neonatal death statistics are abysmal, we rank 50th in all the developed nations. I am outraged at the total lack of media coverage, legal, or governmental actions towards Ob's regarding these terrible outcomes. The fact that 99% of all births occur in the hospital, clearly shows that homebirth has little to do with maternal child health statistics in the USA. I think what is happening here is a form of propaganda used to keep the public confused and fearful, to keep the birth community infighting. All this keeps our attention diverted from the much bigger issue, what is happening to birth in our dominate culture.

Women and babies are dying in the maternal child health care system in the USA.   The real issues are not being addressed publicly.

 I then took a little internet journey over to ACOG’s web-site, and under the Legislative Agenda tab: http://www.acog.org/Advocacy/ACOG_Legislative_Priorities I found this statement: ACOG supports the repeal of all Federal recognition of and reimbursement to untrained midwives delivering babies in out-of-hospital settings.  Rest assured dear sisters this means CPM’s. Untrained is referring to un-medically trained (un indoctrinated) midwives. Now why would ACOG really care about homebirth when it only accounts for 1% of the population? I will tell you why, when ACOG can keep the birth community fighting for its very survival and legitimacy they are able to keep the focus off themselves. ACOG’s biggest fear is that one day women will wake up and start questioning their authority! If ACOG is talking to your state midwifery leadership/organization about collaborating, be for warned. They are up to a much bigger agenda, you can learn a lot about the true interest of ACOG on its website. ACOG’s primary agenda seems to be maintaining the cultural hypnosis that its members are the authority, expert, and only legitimate provider of reproductive healthcare to women in the United States. The sole purpose of this assertion is to secure and maintain economic security for its members and affiliates. I would suggest that the arrests and legislative push back we are seeing nationally have one goal, and that is to keep birth activist busy infighting and defending themselves. That way ACOG does not have to be held accountable for its national birth statistics.  ACOG does not have to address the fact that the USA has a devastatingly incapable birth industry. We are far too busy picking on each other to worry about what ACOG is up to, or what is really happening to women giving birth in our country.

When Ricky Lake gave birth to, The Business of Being Born, http://www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com/ ACOG’s attorneys went ballistic! Ricky was threatened publicly and privately, how dare anyone question the motives of the “National Authority” on women’s health care! ACOG represents an industry whose primary agenda is maintaining its economic interest in the illness and pathology of woman’s bodies. I suggest that a comprehensive understanding of the “history of pathology” and the commodification of women bodies will be necessary for any meaningful discussion of birth reform at this time in our human history. On the thirteenth day of my fifteen day journey to the heart of birth activism in the United States of America, I was invited to join twenty women who had gathered to addressing the rights of future generations.  The very idea that we need to be concerned about the rights of future generations go my attention. These women had invited me to address the ecology of birth and it’s significant to future generations. For the last 40 years I have been deeply involved in birth psychology. http://birthpsychology.com/ Birth psychology shows us that trauma and pain in childbirth affects the very core of our being.  Michael Odent, the famous French Obstetrician, says that the survival of our humanity is in the balance, based on our “dominate cultural” birth practices. China, South and Central America, and much of Asia now have 80-90% caesarian section rates. Western obstetrical practices are being sold, and used on oppressed women all over our Mother Earth. Women are losing the ability to give birth normally, at an alarming rate. Just as our earth has been exploited by the commodification of all its resources, women’s bodies have been commoditized. Just as the dominate culture does not want to see the damage they are doing to our mother earth…We as a people choose to arrogantly assume that we can do what every we want to the motherbaby and still survive.  WE MUST WAKE UP…nature has wisdom, and we are a part of her.

The conclusion of my fifteen day slumber party with “EarthBirth” activists ended with an amazing gift. A visit from a powerful Medicine Women, she came to speak to the women gathered. She came to give us heart and inspiration for the work ahead. And she brought with her the words of the Elder indigenous peoples of our planet earth. I will post all of what she read at a later date, but in essence what the Elders of our planet are saying is that the time has come for the feminine wisdom to rise up again. The fierce protectiveness of the mother for her children must be felt again. I see this guardianship rising in the hearts and minds of Eco Feminist and Birth Activists. I see the “dominate cultural” arrogance, the belief that our earth and her resources are ours for the taking stopping. The ignorance that we humans know more than nature and can therefor use her for our own selfish gain, these ideas are foolish and un-sustainable. The use of fear, terror, and oppression of women must end. When this ends the oppression of birth and of our earth will stop.   Please dear sisters and brothers… try a slumber party with your fellow birth activists….BIRTH and our Mother Earth needs YOUR VOICE, HEART and HANDS now! There is power in numbers…unite!
